A chemical cupboard can look orderly while still creating a serious workplace risk. A bottle without a label, an acidic toilet cleaner beside bleach, or a leaking container stored above paper stock can quickly turn a routine cleaning task into an incident. Knowing how to store cleaning chemicals is therefore not simply a housekeeping matter. It is a practical part of protecting staff, visitors, stock and your premises.
For schools, accommodation sites, aged care facilities, food businesses and workshops, the right storage system supports safer cleaning, more reliable operations and clearer compliance. The controls do not need to be complicated, but they do need to suit the chemicals on site, the people using them and the way your operation works.
Start with the chemical inventory and SDS
Before selecting a cupboard or reorganising a storeroom, identify every chemical held on site. This includes cleaners, sanitisers, degreasers, descalers, laundry products, dishwashing chemicals, disinfectants, pool chemicals and maintenance products. Do not overlook products kept in cleaners’ trolleys, housekeeping stores, plant rooms or maintenance sheds.
Each product should be listed with its name, quantity, usual storage location and the current Safety Data Sheet (SDS). The SDS explains the product hazards, suitable storage conditions, incompatible substances, personal protective equipment and first-aid measures. Product labels and SDS information should guide your storage decisions rather than assumptions based on a container’s colour or intended use.
This review is also a good opportunity to remove expired, damaged or unidentified products. Unknown chemicals should never be tipped into drains, mixed with other waste or put in general rubbish. Isolate them and arrange appropriate advice or disposal through a suitable provider.
How to store cleaning chemicals in the right location
Choose a secure, dry and well-ventilated area that is away from food, beverages, medicines, linen and personal belongings. The storage area should not be accessible to children, customers, residents or unauthorised staff. In many workplaces, a lockable chemical cupboard or dedicated storeroom is the most practical option.
The ideal location depends on the products you hold. A small café may need a compact lockable cabinet close to the wash-up area, while a large hotel or aged care facility may require separate housekeeping, laundry and maintenance storage zones. What matters is that staff can access products efficiently without keeping them in unsafe temporary locations such as corridors, food-preparation areas or under public-facing counters.
Keep chemicals out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources and protected from moisture where required. Avoid storing containers on high shelves where they can be difficult to retrieve safely. Heavy drums and bulk containers belong at low level, preferably within secondary containment such as a bunded tray or cabinet. This helps contain leaks before they spread across floors, into drains or onto nearby stock.
Separate incompatible products
The most critical storage rule is simple: chemicals that can react must be kept apart. Bleach and other chlorine-based products must never be stored with acids, including many toilet bowl cleaners and descalers. If mixed, they can release dangerous chlorine gas. Similarly, ammonia-based products should be separated from chlorine products.
Flammable products, where used, need storage away from ignition sources and in accordance with their SDS requirements. Strong alkalis, acids, oxidisers and solvents may also need separate storage arrangements. Physical separation can mean different shelves with clear barriers, separate cabinets, or separate rooms for larger quantities. The best method depends on the substances and volume held on site.
Do not rely on staff remembering every incompatibility during a busy shift. Clear shelf labels, colour-coded storage zones and simple signage reduce the chance of a product being returned to the wrong place. Where cleaning teams work across several sites or shifts, consistent layouts make safe practice much easier to maintain.
Keep every container labelled and closed
Store chemicals in their original, correctly labelled containers wherever possible. The label provides essential information for safe use, emergency response and replenishment. Never transfer a chemical into a drink bottle, food container or unlabelled spray bottle, even as a short-term measure.
If a product must be decanted into a smaller container for operational use, the new container needs a durable label that identifies the product and its hazards. It should also be compatible with the chemical being transferred. Reusing an old chemical bottle for a different product can create confusion and increase the risk of dangerous mixing.
Make sure caps, taps and dispensing fittings are secure after use. A partly open container can leak, release vapour or become contaminated. Check bottles for swelling, cracking, corrosion or damaged seals, particularly in areas that experience temperature changes or where bulk products are handled regularly.
Build safe storage into daily routines
A chemical store is only safe when its condition is checked consistently. Assign responsibility for the area to a supervisor, facilities team member or trained cleaner, and include chemical storage in routine site inspections. This is especially useful after deliveries, stocktakes, staff changes or seasonal busy periods.
A practical inspection should confirm that access remains restricted, labels are readable, incompatible products are separated, shelves are clean and containers are undamaged. Check that SDS documents are available to the people who need them and that staff know where to find them. If products are supplied in concentrates, review whether dilution stations, measuring equipment and staff procedures are reducing the risk of over-concentration and spills.
Good stock rotation also matters. Order quantities that match realistic usage, rather than allowing slow-moving chemicals to accumulate for years. Concentrated commercial products can reduce packaging, freight and storage space, but only when the site has the right dispensing controls and trained staff to use them safely.
Prepare for leaks and spills before they happen
Even well-managed stores can experience a dropped bottle, failed cap or delivery damage. Keep suitable spill-response equipment near the storage area, based on the products held. This may include absorbent materials, disposal bags, gloves, eye protection and clear instructions for isolating the area and seeking assistance.
Staff should understand that they must not clean up every spill in the same way. The SDS and site procedures should determine the response. For example, adding water to a spill may be inappropriate for some products, while mixing residues from different chemicals can make the situation worse. Any significant spill, exposure or release to a drain should be escalated promptly under your workplace emergency procedures.
Eyewash access, handwashing facilities and suitable personal protective equipment should be considered as part of the overall chemical-handling system. Storage, use and emergency response work together. A locked cupboard alone is not enough if staff cannot respond confidently when something goes wrong.
Make training part of the storage system
The people who receive deliveries, restock cupboards, dilute products and clean at the end of a shift all need practical instruction. Training should cover the hazards of the products they use, how to read labels, why certain chemicals are separated, correct dilution methods and what to do in an emergency.
For multi-site organisations, standardising products can simplify this process. Fewer chemical types can mean less training complexity, easier SDS management and lower risk of incompatible products appearing in the same store. However, standardisation should not come at the expense of cleaning performance. A commercial kitchen, guest bathroom, laundry and automotive workshop may require different chemistry and controls.
