A toy may pass through several small hands, be mouthed, dropped on the floor and returned to the activity table within minutes. That makes knowing how to sanitise childcare toys more than a housekeeping task. It is a practical control for reducing cross-contamination, protecting children and educators, and maintaining a centre that families can trust.
A sound toy hygiene programme does not rely on a single spray bottle at the end of the day. It combines cleaning, correct sanitiser use, safe handling, documented routines and staff training. The best approach is one that fits the age groups, toy types and daily flow of your centre, so it is completed consistently even on busy days.
How to sanitise childcare toys: clean first, then sanitise
Cleaning and sanitising are related but different steps. Cleaning removes visible dirt, food residue, saliva and oils from a surface. Sanitising uses an approved product to reduce germs to a safer level. If a toy is visibly soiled, sanitiser cannot work as intended through the soil layer.
Start by removing the toy from use and checking it for damage. Cracks, loose components and porous areas can trap moisture and contamination, while also creating a physical safety issue. Clean the toy using a suitable detergent solution and a clean cloth or brush, following the product directions. Rinse where required, particularly if the detergent label instructs it.
Apply a sanitiser that is appropriate for the surface and the setting. Follow the label dilution rate and required contact time exactly. A sanitiser wiped away too quickly, or mixed too weakly, may not deliver the expected hygiene result. Allow toys to air dry fully before returning them to children, unless the product instructions require a final rinse.
Do not assume that a stronger solution is safer or more effective. Over-concentrated chemicals can leave residue, damage plastics and create unnecessary exposure risks. Commercial dosing equipment or pre-measured dilution systems can help maintain consistency across rooms and shifts.
Choose products suited to childcare environments
The right chemical depends on the toy material, the soil present and whether the item is likely to go in a child’s mouth. Review the product label, Safety Data Sheet and Product Data Sheet before introducing any chemical to a childcare cleaning programme. Staff should understand the dilution, contact time, personal protective equipment requirements, storage instructions and first-aid information.
For mouthed toys, select a product that is suitable for the intended surface and follow any rinse directions without exception. Never mix cleaning chemicals, even if both products are used in the same area. Mixing products can produce harmful fumes or reduce their effectiveness.
Spraying chemical directly around children or onto a pile of toys is not good practice. Apply the solution in a controlled cleaning area, or to a cloth where the label permits, to reduce overspray and ensure every surface receives proper attention. Keep all chemicals secured in a locked area away from children.
Set frequencies around real touch points
Not every toy needs the same cleaning frequency. A wooden puzzle that is handled briefly by older children carries a different risk from a teething toy shared in an infant room. A practical schedule prioritises items that are mouthed, frequently handled or exposed to bodily fluids.
Use a routine that clearly separates clean toys from toys awaiting cleaning. Labelled tubs, lidded containers or a designated wash-up area prevent an item from being returned to play before it has been processed. At a minimum, build the following triggers into the centre’s programme:
- Sanitise mouthed toys immediately after use, before another child handles them.
- Clean and sanitise shared, high-touch toys and equipment at least daily, with more frequent attention in infant and toddler rooms.
- Remove and process any toy immediately after contact with vomit, blood, urine, faeces or other body fluids.
- Complete a full toy clean on a scheduled rotation, including toys that appear clean but are handled less often.
During a gastroenteritis, influenza or other infectious illness event, increase the cleaning frequency in line with your centre’s infection-control procedure and current public health guidance. Some events may require disinfection rather than routine sanitising. This decision should be based on the organism of concern, the product directions and your site’s established response plan.
Match the method to the toy material
Hard, non-porous plastic toys are generally the simplest to clean and sanitise. Wash all surfaces, including wheels, grooves and undersides, then sanitise and air dry. Dishwasher-safe items may be processed in a dishwasher only where the manufacturer permits it and the wash cycle is suitable.
Soft toys, dress-up clothing and fabric learning resources need a different approach. Launder washable items according to their care label, dry them completely and remove anything that cannot be adequately cleaned after contamination. A plush toy with damaged seams, embedded soil or no washable care instructions may be unsuitable for shared use, particularly in rooms for younger children.
Wooden toys need care because excessive soaking can cause swelling, cracking and surface deterioration. Clean with a lightly dampened cloth, use a compatible sanitising method, and allow the item to dry thoroughly. If the finish is worn or splintering, remove it from the play environment.
Electronic toys, tablets and equipment with batteries should never be immersed. Switch them off, remove batteries where appropriate, and use only manufacturer-approved wipes or a lightly dampened cloth. Pay attention to buttons, handles and touchscreens, which can be high-contact surfaces.
Outdoor equipment deserves the same attention as indoor resources. Ride-on toys, climbing handles, sandpit tools and water-play items are exposed to dirt, weather and frequent handling. Schedule these items for cleaning after use or at the end of each session, depending on the activity and level of contamination.
Build the process into daily operations
A written toy-cleaning procedure turns good intentions into a repeatable standard. It should identify who is responsible, when cleaning occurs, which products are approved, the required dilution and contact time, and where records are kept. Include a clear process for dealing with body-fluid contamination and illness outbreaks.
A simple sign-off record can give room leaders and centre managers visibility of completed tasks, missed tasks and recurring problems. It also supports internal reviews, staff handovers and discussions with families or auditors when hygiene practices need to be demonstrated. Records should be useful, not burdensome. A checklist that staff can complete accurately is more valuable than an overly detailed form that is ignored.
Training matters just as much as the products selected. New educators, relief staff and cleaners should be shown the difference between cleaning and sanitising, how to prepare solutions safely, and how to keep clean and dirty items separate. Refresher training helps address shortcuts that can develop over time, such as reusing dirty cloths or guessing chemical dilution rates.
Colour-coded cloths and cleaning tools can further reduce cross-contamination. For example, equipment used for bathrooms or nappy-change areas should never be used for toy cleaning. Reusable cloths must be laundered appropriately between uses; a damp cloth left in a bucket can become a contamination source rather than a hygiene tool.
Protect children, staff and the environment
A responsible toy hygiene programme balances hygiene performance with chemical safety and environmental impact. Choose products that are effective at the correct dilution, supplied with clear documentation and appropriate for the surfaces in use. Concentrated products paired with reliable dilution control can reduce packaging waste, transport volume and chemical overuse.
Avoid unnecessary disposable wipes and single-use materials where a washable, controlled alternative is suitable. However, reusables only deliver a sustainability benefit when they can be washed and managed hygienically. For high-risk contamination events, disposable materials may be the safer operational choice.
Product selection should also consider fragrance sensitivity, ventilation and staff exposure. A heavily fragranced product is not evidence of a cleaner environment. What matters is that the product is fit for purpose, used according to its instructions and supported by a disciplined process.
