How to Choose Commercial Degreasers for Your Site

Grease is rarely just grease. In a commercial kitchen it may be baked-on cooking oil and carbon residue; in a workshop it can include mineral oil, hydraulic fluid and road grime. Choosing a product based on strength alone can damage surfaces, increase chemical use and create avoidable safety risks. Understanding how to choose commercial degreasers starts with identifying the soil, the surface and the cleaning process your team can reliably follow.

The right degreaser should remove contamination efficiently while supporting worker safety, environmental responsibilities and consistent day-to-day results. For facilities managing multiple areas, it should also fit a practical chemical system that staff can understand, store and reorder with confidence.

How to choose commercial degreasers by cleaning task

Start with where the product will be used and what it needs to remove. A general-purpose degreaser may be suitable for routine cleaning of benches, walls, floors and equipment exteriors. Heavier-duty products are often needed for extraction hoods, ovens, grill plates, workshop floors and machinery parts where grease has accumulated over time.

The key distinction is between fresh, light soil and aged, polymerised or carbonised deposits. Fresh oil may respond well to a moderate alkaline degreaser and mechanical agitation. Heat-exposed fats on cooking equipment commonly need a stronger formulation, sufficient dwell time and scrubbing. Using an overly aggressive chemical for a light daily task can be wasteful, while a mild product on heavily baked-on grease can lead to repeated applications and frustrated staff.

Consider the source of the contamination too. Food oils, animal fats, petroleum oils, lubricants and waxes do not all behave the same way. Automotive and engineering sites may need a product formulated for mineral oils and workshop grime, while hospitality operations need a solution that is appropriate for food-preparation environments and can be thoroughly rinsed from relevant surfaces.

Match the degreaser to the surface

A degreaser is only effective if it is compatible with the substrate beneath the soil. This is where many otherwise sound cleaning programmes fail. Strong alkaline products can be highly effective on stainless steel and certain hard surfaces, but they may dull aluminium, damage painted finishes or affect sensitive coatings if used incorrectly.

Before selecting a product, identify the principal surfaces in the area. These may include stainless steel, ceramic tiles, sealed concrete, vinyl flooring, powder-coated metal, painted walls, plastics, glass, aluminium or rubber. Check the Product Data Sheet for approved applications, dilution guidance and material warnings. When introducing a new product, test it first on a small, inconspicuous area.

Flooring deserves particular attention. A degreaser that removes oil from a commercial kitchen floor or workshop bay must also be suitable for the floor finish and leave no slippery residue. This is not simply a presentation issue. Slips are a significant operational risk, especially where water, food residue or vehicle traffic are involved.

Consider pH, but do not treat it as the whole answer

Alkaline degreasers are widely used because they break down fats and oils effectively. As alkalinity increases, cleaning power may increase for certain soils, but so can the risk of surface damage, skin irritation and handling requirements. Neutral or lower-alkaline products may be a better choice for routine cleaning, delicate surfaces or sites seeking a less hazardous daily-use option.

Solvent-based products can be effective on some oily soils, but they need careful assessment for ventilation, flammability, odour, worker exposure and waste handling. Water-based degreasers are often preferred for regular commercial use because they can be easier to rinse, manage and integrate into standard cleaning procedures. The best option depends on the task, not on a single claim such as “industrial strength”.

Decide how the product will be applied

The application method affects both product choice and dilution. A degreaser used in a spray bottle, bucket, scrubber dryer, foam unit or parts-washing system needs to perform correctly through that equipment. Some formulas are designed to foam and cling to vertical surfaces, while others are low-foaming for use in floor machines or automatic scrubbers.

For daily cleaning, a concentrated product used through a controlled dilution system can reduce packaging, simplify storage and provide more consistent results. However, concentrates only deliver value when staff have access to correct dispensing equipment and know how to use it. If teams are manually estimating dilution from a large container, overuse and underuse are both likely.

Ready-to-use products may be more practical for smaller sites, mobile cleaning teams or spot-cleaning tasks. They remove the dilution step, but typically create more packaging and may carry a higher cost per usable litre. Assess total cost in use rather than comparing container prices alone.

Dwell time is equally important. Most degreasers need time to loosen soil before wiping, scrubbing or rinsing. If cleaners are expected to spray and immediately wipe, specify a product suited to that workflow. If the task allows for several minutes of dwell time, a different formulation may achieve better results with less manual effort.

Build safety and compliance into the decision

Commercial degreasing is a chemical-handling activity, not just a cleaning task. Every product should be supported by a current Safety Data Sheet and Product Data Sheet, with clear information on hazards, personal protective equipment, first aid, storage and disposal. These documents should be accessible to the people using the chemical, not filed away solely for procurement purposes.

Review whether staff will need gloves, eye protection, aprons or other protective equipment. Consider ventilation where products are used in enclosed kitchens, plant rooms, workshops or bathrooms. Chemical concentrates should be stored securely, clearly labelled and kept away from incompatible products.

Never assume a degreaser also sanitises. Degreasing removes oil and soil that can shelter bacteria, but a food-contact surface may still require a separate sanitising step after cleaning and rinsing. In kitchens, aged care, childcare and accommodation settings, separating cleaning and sanitising procedures helps staff achieve both visible cleanliness and hygiene control.

For food service operations, ensure the product is used according to its instructions and that food-contact surfaces are rinsed where required. A clean surface should not carry chemical residue, odour or a film that affects food safety or guest experience.

Look beyond purchase price

The lowest-priced drum is not automatically the lowest-cost choice. Calculate the working dilution, expected coverage, labour time, water use, packaging volume and frequency of re-cleaning. A product that cuts through grease faster at the correct dilution may reduce labour and improve cleaning consistency, even if its upfront price is higher.

Reliability matters as well. If a site uses a degreaser across kitchens, washrooms, maintenance areas and housekeeping stores, supply continuity and consistent product specifications are essential. Changing formulas without proper review can disrupt procedures, training and safety documentation.

Sustainability should be assessed with the same practical lens. Look for products that support responsible chemical use, concentrated formats where appropriate, accurate dispensing and reduced unnecessary packaging. Environmental claims should be balanced against cleaning performance and site requirements. A product that needs excessive doses or repeated applications is unlikely to be the more sustainable operational choice.

Make the choice easy for your cleaning team

The most effective degreaser is one staff will use correctly every shift. Keep product selection focused where possible. Rather than supplying multiple similar products with unclear purposes, define which degreaser is for daily kitchen cleaning, which is for heavy-duty periodic work, and which is for specialist areas such as workshops.

Clear labelling, colour-coded bottles where appropriate, wall charts and practical staff training reduce mistakes. Staff should understand the required dilution, contact time, rinse requirements and surfaces to avoid. Supervisors can then audit outcomes based on consistent procedures rather than individual preferences.
