Hand Sanitiser Versus Handwashing at Work

A hand sanitiser station at reception can improve hygiene behaviour in seconds. It cannot, however, replace a properly located hand basin after a staff member has handled food, cleaned a bathroom, changed a nappy or dealt with visibly dirty equipment. The practical question in hand sanitiser versus handwashing is not which option wins. It is which method best manages the risk at that moment.

For facility managers and business operators, the distinction matters because hygiene systems must work in real conditions: busy shifts, multiple users, varying contamination risks and limited time. A clear hand hygiene programme gives staff the right option where they need it, supports compliance, and avoids the false reassurance that can come from treating sanitiser as a universal substitute.

Hand sanitiser versus handwashing: the practical difference

Handwashing with soap and running water physically removes dirt, grease, organic matter and many microorganisms from the hands. The friction created while rubbing hands together is a central part of the process. It is particularly effective when hands are visibly soiled, sticky, greasy or contaminated through tasks such as food preparation, waste handling, cleaning and personal care.

Alcohol-based hand sanitiser works differently. When applied in the right volume and rubbed over all hand surfaces until dry, it can quickly reduce many common germs. Its value is speed and accessibility. It is useful at entry points, beside shared equipment, in meeting rooms, within vehicles, near service counters and in any location where a hand basin is not immediately available.

Neither system is inherently better in every setting. Sanitiser is often the most practical choice between tasks when hands look clean. Soap and water remain essential where hands are dirty or where the nature of the work calls for physical removal of contaminants.

When handwashing is the right choice

Staff should wash with soap and water when their hands are visibly dirty, after using the toilet, before preparing or handling food, after handling rubbish, and after cleaning tasks that may leave residue on the skin. Handwashing should also be the default after caring for young children, assisting residents or guests with personal care, or dealing with body fluids.

This is especially relevant in aged care, childcare, hospitality and education. In these environments, hand hygiene is not simply a personal habit. It is part of infection prevention, food safety, workplace presentation and duty of care.

A wash station must support good technique. That means an accessible basin, running water, appropriately selected soap, a hygienic drying method and a rubbish bin positioned so staff do not need to touch surrounding surfaces after drying their hands. If the basin is inconvenient, poorly stocked or difficult to access during a busy period, even a well-written hygiene policy will struggle to deliver consistent practice.

When hand sanitiser is the sensible option

Hand sanitiser is well suited to moments when people need to clean their hands promptly and there is no visible soil. Think of a hotel guest arriving at reception, a technician moving between shared devices, staff entering a lunchroom, or a customer using a self-service payment terminal.

In commercial settings, alcohol-based formulations with at least 60 per cent alcohol are generally used for routine sanitising. The product must be available in a sufficient dose, and users need to cover palms, backs of hands, fingers, thumbs and fingertips before allowing it to dry. A quick pump followed by a two-second rub is unlikely to provide the intended benefit.

Placement makes a measurable difference. A dispenser hidden down a corridor will not serve a reception desk, staff entrance or high-traffic touchpoint. Equally, dispensers should not become a substitute for maintaining accessible handwashing facilities in kitchens, washrooms, clinical care areas or cleaning cupboards.

The risks of relying on one method alone

A sanitiser-only approach can fail when hands are coated with food residue, oil, soil or cleaning chemicals. These substances can prevent the sanitiser from making effective contact with the skin. In a commercial kitchen, workshop or housekeeping operation, this limitation is not a minor technical detail. It affects whether staff are actually removing contaminants between tasks.

A handwashing-only approach has different weaknesses. It can leave hygiene gaps where people move quickly through a site or use shared touchpoints far from a basin. Schools, accommodation venues, offices and customer-facing businesses may have dozens of moments each day where a conveniently placed dispenser encourages better behaviour than a basin several rooms away.

There are also product and safety considerations. Alcohol-based sanitisers are flammable and should be stored, dispensed and used in accordance with the product instructions and site safety requirements. Safety Data Sheets should be readily available, particularly where products are held in bulk or issued to staff. In high-use environments, select reliable commercial dispensers and cartridges or refills that are compatible with the system in place.

Skin health deserves attention as well. Frequent hand hygiene can contribute to dryness and irritation, particularly for cleaners, care staff and foodservice teams. A well-designed programme balances effective soap and sanitiser products with staff education and, where appropriate, skin-conditioning options. Staff are more likely to follow procedures when products are pleasant to use and do not leave hands feeling uncomfortable after every shift.

Build a hand hygiene system around the work being done

The strongest hygiene programmes start with a site assessment rather than a product catalogue. Map where people enter, where they perform high-risk tasks, where hand contamination is likely, and where they touch shared surfaces. Then match handwashing and sanitising facilities to those behaviours.

For example, a motel may need hand sanitiser at reception, in staff areas and near breakfast service, while ensuring housekeeping teams have easy access to handwashing facilities between cleaning activities. A childcare centre needs child-appropriate handwashing access, dependable soap and drying supplies, plus sanitiser located and supervised appropriately for adults and visitors. A workshop may require durable wash stations near greasy work zones, with sanitiser available at office entrances and shared terminals.

The same principle applies across a multi-site operation. Standardising dispenser formats, soap types, paper supplies and replenishment processes can simplify procurement and staff training. However, standardisation should not ignore the different risks in each area of the business. The kitchen, front counter, washroom and loading bay do not need identical hygiene solutions.

Train for the moments that matter

Posters and procedures are useful reminders, but training should focus on decision-making. Staff need to understand when sanitiser is appropriate, when they must wash, how long to rub their hands, and what to do if supplies run low.

Give examples that reflect their actual duties. A cleaner returning a vacuum to storage may sanitise after touching shared handles if their hands are clean. The same cleaner must wash with soap and water after emptying a bin or removing gloves following a bathroom clean. A café employee may sanitise after handling a payment terminal, but must wash before food preparation and after clearing used dishes.

Supervisors can reinforce the programme through regular checks of dispenser levels, soap availability, paper towel stock, bin capacity and hand basin condition. Empty dispensers and unstocked washrooms undermine confidence quickly. They also create an avoidable compliance and service risk.

Hygiene, procurement and sustainability need to work together

Hand hygiene is a recurring consumables category, so purchasing decisions have a direct impact on cost control, waste and operational continuity. Choosing dependable dispensers and compatible refills reduces the risk of leakage, inconsistent dosing and emergency substitutions. It also makes it easier for teams to replenish stock correctly.

Sustainability should be considered across the whole system, not reduced to one claim on a label. Look at product concentration, dispenser durability, refill design, packaging volumes, delivery frequency and the amount of product used per handwash or sanitising event. The most responsible option is one that meets hygiene requirements consistently while reducing unnecessary material use and product waste.
