For food-contact surfaces, follow the label directions carefully, including any rinse requirement. A product suitable for a washroom may not be the right choice for a commercial kitchen bench, food display area or childcare meal space.
Build a two-step cleaning system where risk demands it
In many professional environments, the most dependable method is a two-step process: clean first, then sanitise or disinfect where required. This is especially relevant where surfaces are visibly soiled, greasy or exposed to frequent hand contact.
A housekeeping team might use an environmentally preferable all-purpose cleaner for daily removal of dust, spills and fingerprints across low-risk areas. For high-touch points such as door handles, lift buttons, shared equipment, taps, toilet flush plates and reception counters, a suitable disinfectant can then be applied at the correct frequency and contact time.
This approach avoids unnecessary disinfection of every surface while maintaining a higher level of control where it matters. It can also reduce chemical consumption, simplify training and prevent staff from using a strong product for work that only requires routine cleaning.
The required frequency will vary by site. An accommodation provider may focus on guest-room touchpoints between stays and common areas throughout the day. A poorly performing product that requires repeated applications or excessive use is not a sustainable outcome.
Concentrated products can reduce packaging and storage demands, but only when dispensers are correctly calibrated and staff understand the process. Ready-to-use products can be practical for quick-response tasks, although they may create more packaging volume over time. There is no universal answer. The right choice depends on the size of the site, staff capability, storage space, cleaning frequency and the control measures already in place.
Environmental responsibility and infection control should not be treated as competing priorities. The stronger approach is to specify fit-for-purpose products: an effective general cleaner for routine work, a verified sanitiser or disinfectant for identified hygiene risks, and clear procedures that prevent waste and misuse.
Give staff the instructions they can actually follow
Even the best product specification will fail if it is difficult to use on shift. Cleaning procedures should be short, visual and specific to the task. Staff need to know which product belongs in each area, how to dilute it, whether pre-cleaning is required, how long the surface must remain wet and what personal protective equipment is needed.
Keep current Safety Data Sheets and Product Data Sheets accessible, particularly where multiple teams, contractors or relief staff work across the site. Regular refresher training is valuable when products change, new machinery is introduced or an audit identifies inconsistent practice.
